I sometimes compare that to asking, "How much is a red car?" Before anyone can give a meaningful answer, they need considerably more information. Are we talking about a compact car or a luxury SUV? What features and performance do you expect? What is included in the price?

Homes work the same way. A rambler, slab-on-grade home, and two-story home can carry very different costs. So can two homes of the same size with different architectural complexity, materials, systems, and finish levels. A square-foot number by itself does not tell you what you are receiving.

A better question is: What is included in the proposal?

Your builder should provide a thorough, descriptive breakdown of the project. A broad flooring allowance does not tell you which materials are included, where they will be installed, or whether features such as in-floor heat are part of the plan.
