Fabricators Unlimited Celebrating 40 Years

Written by: Brady Drake

Forty years brings change, growth, and bold moves. Just ask founder Tommy Thompson. What began in 1985 as two men in a basement making post-form laminate countertops has grown into a multi-state operation with 155 employees, “the best of the best,” as Tom colls them.

The basement of 806 NP Avenue was the starting point. As demand grew, so did
the need for floor space. Tom was able to secure the building next door and 828 NP Avenue became the home to the manufacturing of not only postform countertops, but custom laminate and solid surface tops. You will also find the Corporate Offices there, along with the City Desk. The 806 building was then transformed into a welcoming and innovative 6,000 sq ft showroom, complete with working kitchens, full quartz slab viewing area, and knowledgeable staff who guide our dealers through product performance, pros and cons.

Residential

To further the reach of Fabricators Unlimited, branches were established… Bismarck, ND; Billings, MT; Brainerd, MN; Fabricators Stone, Fargo, Blaine, MN. To showcase the industries’ newest trends, four of the five branches have showrooms that are consistently updated with vendors changing offerings.

Commercial

From the start, Fabricators embraced innovation. They were the first in North Dakota to fabricate solid surface, they explored thermoforming, brought Dekton to the market by promoting its uniqueness, and adapted 2cm tooling. With knowledge from NDSU & NDSSS, Tom’s drafting and industry background fueled a focus on precision, problem solving and producing a product their dealers wanted to buy. He watches for technology that will continue to advance his operations, from upgraded CNC’s to new templating software.

"Well make the countertops, you make the memories!"

In its early years, Fabricators sold exclusively through dealers, protecting their interests above all else.

As Tom puts it:
1. We don’t lie.
2. If we can’t help you make money, you don’t need us.

That philosophy built the foundation for 40 years of growth and lasting partnerships across the Upper Midwest.

With over a decade of wholesale manufacturing, Tom saw an opportunity for wholesale distribution. In 1996, he launched Fabricators Supply, bringing well-known and trusted brands to his dealer’s market. Starting off with sheet goods of laminate and decorative hardware, he quickly added more items that coordinated with countertops sales…sinks, faucets, functional hardware, cabinet components, cultured marble vanity tops, etc.

In 2007, Tom was given the opportunity to purchase a stone shop on 3rd Ave in Fargo. Due to homeowners now trending more to natural stone and quartz, it was perfect timing. This opened up a whole new world of vendors for Fabricators with whom they have developed strong ties and friendships. They were able to keep providing that one-more-thing to the dealers that would keep them trending and advancing.

With an “everyone deserves a second chance” attitude, Fabricators has a company culture of giving back. Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, CCRI, Sharehouse, Cops for Kids, New Life Center and groups recommended by staff, have all felt the results of Fabricators caring and giving. They are also active members of the industry associations in their area, including Building Industry Association of the RRV, AIA, NDID, ND Apartment Association, ND Lumberman’s Association, Fargo Chamber, and the Downtown Community Project.

As their knowledge and capabilities grew, the Commercial Division of Fabricators became an integral part of this business. Healthcare projects like Sanford, university opportunities at UND & NDSU, and the beautiful transformation of the Newman Center are just few. Being awarded these projects is a high compliment to Fabricators, but Tom never loses his focus on what built Fabricators and gave it his strong foundation… his dealer base.

The Future? As long as this family-owned and operated business continues to carry on its commitment to quality, keeps a watchful eye on the needs of their customers and stays on a steady path of doing it right the first time, they will see you down the road in the many years to come.
