Q: Can you please tell us about your company?
A: Our focus is home maintenance and care. A customer would schedule their home assessment, then a Dwel home pro would come out to the property and complete the assessment. From there, we create a customized home care plan and schedule a minimum of two visits per year. During these visits, a Dwel home pro will complete tasks on the home care plan. These tasks can include things like changing furnace filters, cleaning gutter, and other general handyman tasks. A homeowner will also have the ability to add tasks to each visit.
Q: What are you trying to achieve with your company?
A: We are trying to help busy professionals with the upkeep of their homes by completing the routine maintenance needed.
As the founder of Dwel and owner of Dwella Inspections, my mission is to streamline home maintenance and empower customers with confidence in their home investments. Our team at Dwella Inspections offers unparalleled expertise in all aspects of home construction, ensuring each inspection delivers safety and security to homeowners. I leverage my extensive background in residential construction and mortgage banking to enhance the home-buying experience. At Dwel, we’re innovating the way homeowners manage maintenance, driven by a passion for excellence in customer service and entrepreneurship.”
Q: How did your company come to be?
A: I’m a home inspector by trade and continued to notice the same recurring maintenance not getting done.
Q: Why did you join the Dakota Business Lending cohort?
A: Multiple reasons, mainly I wanted to surround myself with other small business owners who are in a similar stage of start-up.
Q: What has your experience been like with the cohort so far?
A: The cohort has been great. I think what makes it unique is that the residents are very diverse in what we do, which gives us a lot of other perspectives from outside our industry.
Q: What is the five-year plan for your business?
A: My goal is to grow Dwel to expand it throughout the upper midwest in the next five years.
Q: Can you describe a challenge your company has faced, and how you overcame it?
A: Originally we were focused on the consumer tech side of the business. As we received feedback we learned quickly that we needed to pivot our focus to the consumer service side. From there we can learn what tech we need to build.
Q: What trends in your industry are you most excited about or concerned by?
A: The incorporation of technology is really the most interesting trend in the construction and home service industry. It is going to help create significant efficiencies in the overall communication during the process.
Q: How do you measure success in your role and for your company?
A: As a solopreneur I get to wear all of the hats of the business. For me, the biggest measure is getting my daily priority list completed every day. Those small wins continue to stack up.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of running your business?
A: Learning all of the different aspects of a business and understanding what I need help with.
Q: What advice would you give to other business owners out there?
A: Sometimes you need to just keep it simple and start with paper and pencil. Once you determine your idea makes sense, invest in creating amazing processes and implementing technology.
